Past President Howard Seckendorf, who died while serving as Rochester Rotary Club President in 2009, had a dream. His dream was that every child who wanted to play baseball, or be involved with a sports team, regardless of physical limitation, should be able to have fulfillment. "Buddy Ball" was established for youngsters who are either physically and/or mentally challenged. This division makes allowance for a “buddy” to help the player swing a bat, round the bases, catch a ball, etc. Buddy-Ball is designed so that everyone has the opportunity to have fun, but no fields designed and engineered to accommdate the physically challenged currently exist in New Hampshire .
In memory of President Howard Seckendorf, Rochester Rotary Charities and the Seckendorf family have embarked upon the challenge to make "Howie's" dream a reality, hence "Howie's Field of Dreams" was born. Roger Allen Baseball Association in Rochester has become a partner in the project and the field has been designed and will be built at Roger Allen Park. Approximately $300,000 will be needed in cash and in-kind donations to construct the field and the necessary amenities such as handicapped parking and restroom facilities.
To date, through memorial contributions and fundraisers, more than $100,000 has been raised. Many more fundraisers are in the planning stages and community members are encouraged to send tax deductible contributions to Rochester Rotary Charities, PO Box 779, Rochester, NH 03866 (Attn: Howie's Field).
