Introduction of the District Governor
Jul 17, 2017
Join us as we hear from our District Governor Dave Underhill. Dave is a wonderful speaker and will be sharing District 7780 initiative for the coming year.
Dave Underhill was born in upstate New York, spent his early years on Eastern Long Island and then came to New England. He graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy and Boston University, with a B.S. in Broadcasting and Film, minor in business administration with post-graduate studies (non-degree) in business at Babson and the University of Chicago.
His early passion for radio, television and media was fueled by a student internship at WGBH-TV, and then he worked during college as a Red Sox camera operator and technical crew staffer for Boston’s WBZ-TV, where he met his wife Linda. He became chief engineer at WCVB-TV, and their son Graeme was born while they lived in Framingham MA.
In 1983, they purchased and ran WKVT AM/FM in Brattleboro VT, where their small community stations were highly active in support of local non-profits. Along with reporting morning news and persistent sales efforts to grow the business, Dave began his involvement in Rotary. Joining the Brattleboro club in 1984, he served on the board, as secretary and in 1989-1990 as club president. He also became chair of the club’s Gateway Foundation. In 1994, he was part of a small pilot team that traveled to El Salvador to explore starting clean-water projects; in later years, long after his departure, that club pioneered its Pure Water for the World initiative.
Dave remained with the club until 1996, when his career took him to Chicago as a project manager and executive for Tribune Broadcasting and Tribune Publishing. While at Tribune he oversaw the construction of 24-hour cable news station CFN-13 in Orlando, served as CEO and GM of 24-hour news station CLTV in Chicago, and became SVP/Interactive Programming for Tribune.
In 2006, Dave returned to New England and then to Rotary. Now a self-employed consultant with marketing and media clients, Dave is past-president of the Portsmouth Rotary Club. He has served as club Interact chair for three years, and on the finance committee and board of directors.
In addition to his Rotary service, he serves as a volunteer small-business mentor for SCORE. He helped to start and build Portsmouth’s community access cable station, PPMtv, and does annual fund work for Phillips Exeter. Dave and Linda delight in having son Graeme, daughter-in-law Heather and grand-dog Trey living nearby in Raymond NH, and when he’s not immersed in all-of-the-above he enjoys fair skiing, bad golf, reading, music and international travel.
